How to Renew a Residence Permit?
When to Start Renewing Your Residence Permit in Turkey
You must start renewing your residence permit (ikamet) 60 calendar days before the expiration date of your current card. This is the timeframe set by the Turkish Migration Directorate (GÖÇ). If you miss this window, the online appointment system will not allow you to submit your application — and you will have to leave the country and then go through the initial residence permit procedure again from scratch.
Important: the expiry date is printed on the plastic ikamet card. Do not rely on the date you received the card — check the "Date of Expiry" field. Set a reminder in your calendar 70–75 days before this date to allow time for document collection.

Which Types of Residence Permits Can Be Renewed
Turkey has several categories of residence permits, and the conditions and possibility of renewal depend directly on your ikamet type:
- Short-term Residence Permit (Kısa Dönem) — the most common. Issued for a period of 6 months to 2 years. Grounds: tourism, property ownership, medical treatment, business travel, course studies. Renewable as long as the original ground remains valid.
- Family Residence Permit (Aile) — for spouses and children of Turkish citizens or residents. Valid for up to 3 years. Renewal requires proof that the family relationship still exists.
- Student Residence Permit (Öğrenci) — for students enrolled in Turkish universities. Renewable for the duration of the academic program.
- Long-term Residence Permit (Uzun Dönem) — equivalent to permanent residence. Granted after 8 years of continuous residence in Turkey and does not require renewal.
Please note: a tourist residence permit obtained on the basis of a rental agreement can no longer be renewed. If you obtained your ikamet this way, you will need to change the basis of your stay to continue residing legally — for example, by purchasing property, registering a company, or enrolling in an educational program.
Residence Permit Through Property Purchase: What Has Changed
Since October 2023, the Turkish Migration Directorate has set a single property value threshold for obtaining a residence permit — at least 200,000 US dollars according to cadastral valuation, regardless of the region. Previously, different provinces had different minimum amounts (from 50,000 to 75,000 dollars), but now the rule is unified.
A property ownership-based residence permit (on the basis of TAPU) is issued for up to 2 years and can be renewed as long as you retain ownership of the property. This is one of the most reliable ways to stay in Turkey long-term. After 5 years of residence with this type of ikamet, you can apply for citizenship, and after 8 years — for an indefinite long-term residence permit.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Renew an Ikamet
Step 1. Complete the Online Application
Go to the official Migration Directorate portal — e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr. Select the "Uzatma Başvurusu" (application for renewal) section. The system will ask you to enter your current ikamet number, date of birth, and contact details. Fill in all fields of the form in Turkish or English, carefully cross-checking the information with your passport and current residence permit card.
Step 2. Gather the Document Package
Basic list of documents for renewing a residence permit in Turkey:
- Completed and printed online application form from the e-ikamet website.
- 4 color passport-sized photos on a white background, taken no more than 6 months ago.
- Copy of your foreign passport — the page with the photo and the page with the last entry stamp into Turkey.
- Copy of your current ikamet (front and back).
- Health insurance (Sağlık Sigortası) covering the entire requested renewal period. Not required for persons under 18.
- Proof of residential address: TAPU (certificate of ownership) or a notarized rental agreement with a copy of the landlord's passport.
- Proof of financial means: a Turkish bank account statement showing a sufficient balance of about 500–600 dollars per person per month.
- Receipt of the state fee payment.
For a family residence permit, you will additionally need marriage and birth certificates for children with a notarized translation into Turkish.
Step 3. Book an Appointment and Pay the Fee
After completing the online form, the system will offer you to choose the date and time of your visit to the GÖÇ (İl Göç İdaresi) office at your place of residence. There you will also receive the state fee calculation. You can pay it through a bank, at a PTT branch, or online. The fee amount depends on your nationality and the requested period. Approximately from 650 to 3,400 Turkish lira.
Step 4. Visit the Migration Office
On the appointed day, appear at GÖÇ personally with the complete document package. An officer will check the papers, verify the data, and ask clarifying questions if necessary. If everything is in order, you will be issued a receipt confirming the acceptance of your application. From that moment on, you are staying in the country legally even if your current ikamet expires — until a decision is made.
Step 5. Wait for the Decision and Receive the Card
The application processing time is 30 to 90 days. You can track the status on the same portal e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr. If the decision is positive, your new ikamet card will be sent by registered mail via PTT to your residential address. Make sure your mailbox is labeled and accessible.

Common Reasons for Residence Permit Renewal Rejection
The Turkish Migration Directorate tightens the requirements every year. Here are the most common reasons why a renewal may be denied:
- Incomplete document package — the absence of even one paper from the mandatory list almost certainly leads to rejection.
- Insufficient bank balance — the account must confidently cover expenses for the entire requested residence permit term.
- Late submission — an application submitted later than 60 days before the ikamet expires is not accepted.
- Address mismatch — if you changed your place of residence but did not notify GÖÇ, this is a serious violation.
- Criminal record certificate without an apostille or older than 6 months — a common technical mistake.
- Health insurance for a shorter period than the requested residence permit term.
- Attempt to renew a tourist residence permit based on rental — as mentioned above, this type of ikamet cannot be renewed.
What to Do in Case of Rejection
If you receive a rejection notice, do not panic. You have 10 days for an administrative appeal through the same GÖÇ office. In your appeal, you need to argue reasonably why the decision should be reconsidered and attach the missing or corrected documents. You can also submit a new application, having eliminated the reason for rejection — but it will be for an initial residence permit, not a renewal.
